Psalm 19:4-6 (NIV)
Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun, which is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is hidden from its heat.

This past weekend was the hottest of the year thus far. Temperatures rose as high as 92 degrees. Needless to say, it was hot in our house. We really hadn’t needed to use our central air conditioning much this year. Most of the warm days have been moderately so. If ever there was a time when it would have been refreshing to have some cool air flowing through the house, this was the time. However, as we attempted to use our air conditioning system, we discovered that it was in need of repair. It simply would not supply cool air. While we waited for a serviceman to come repair the system, we struggled with the heat that filled our house.

At first glance, all that one can see is that this was an uncomfortable situation. Physically speaking, it definitely was. However, if we look at what God has to say about heat, we may find another perspective. Psalm 19:4-6 provides a discussion about the heavens; specifically the sun. These verses provide us with a very different outlook on heat. In these scriptures, the writer compares the sun with the Glory of God and the heat that resonates from the sun with God’s presence.

Scripture tells us that nothing is hidden from the sun’s heat. For those who sincerely love God and seek God with all their heart, His presence is never hidden from us. It surrounds us, encompasses us, and keeps us warm. Further, we are protected, comforted and healed by the presence of God. We can find rest in God when we lean on Him and trust in his ways. Just as the temperature rises with an increase in heat, God’s presence increases in our lives as we draw nearer to Him.

As my family dealt with the extreme heat experienced in our household this past weekend, it was good to be reminded of this spiritual view of heat. When we understand that the bible uses the sun as a metaphor for the Glory of God and its heat as a metaphor for God’s presence, we can rejoice while we wait for the temperature to cool in our house once again.
