Spring Housecleaning
Don’t look now, but it’s spring housecleaning time again! And speaking from a personal point of view, I think we, as Christians, need to do a “housecleaning” of our own, inside, where we think no one else can see…well, almost no one else! How would we go about this process? I’ve given it some thought and come up with a five-step process.
First..start at the “attic”. You know, the place you keep all those old-fashioned notions and preconceived ideas about how “other folks” should act. Now, throw open the windows, let in lots of fresh air. Sweep the cobwebs from the corners. Take a good look around. What really needs to be thrown away so the things that are important like sweet memories and loving thoughts.. and hopes.. and dreams have room to breathe?
Second..go to the “basement”. It may seem dark and scary but not for long. Look for all those “buried resentments”, “hidden desires”, and all the negativity that only makes excess clutter and serves no useful purpose at all. Haul it all out of there! Throw it away! Now take a new look at where you are. Not so scary after all, is it? In fact, it’s kind of cool and dark, just the place to go when you need to do a little soul searching. Who knows what treasures you might find!!
Third..and this is a BIG one, for here we are in the “heart” of the house, and first we’re going to clean the fireplace and throw away all those ashes that resulted when dreams went up in smoke, when the flames of passion cooled, when angers and resentments burned out of control and finally died.. but not until every last ember had been lit and re-lit many times. Clean the hearthstones and the mantel. Wipe away all the soot. Make way for a new fire, much bigger, much brighter, fanned by God’s glory. And this time, invite someone else to come gather warmth at your fire. Re-kindle the flames of hope and believing.
Fourth..how about the “windows”? Have they accumulated so much dirt and grime that you can’t see out and God can just barely see in? Let’s apply some elbow grease and really make them shine! Wow! What a difference..you can actually see the sunshine and the rainbows. It’s not a cloudy day after all!
And the fifth and final step…put out a fresh new WELCOME mat. Invite folks to come and find rest and comfort and joy and peace here in this house “swept clean with love”. Then, when Christ comes to knock on your door, He’ll find it already swung wide open in joyful anticipation of His arrival!
Happy housecleaning and see you in the fall!!
