The Lilac Flower

Today I found a little lilac flower beside the shore,
Seemingly fragile but rooted in this harsh salty scrub.
Delicate florets, short green stem, yet more,
The universal mystery hidden in a tiny shrub.

Each cell is, itself, a miracle to wonder at:
Structures of startling complexity.
Generations stretching back in time
From now to a distant age.

An unbroken line to the drawing board.
And yet you cling to this coarse land;
Alone here unlike the meadow hoard.
A gift from God in wind blown sand.
