The Silver Train Sped By
The silver train sped by, the babe kicked in the crib
Every time he cried-- his mother tended him.
The silver train sped by, the boy went off to school
His backpack bulged with books-- but his mother made
The rules.
The silver train sped by, the boy tried out for sports
He found that he was good-- with mother in his court..
The silver train sped by, fuzz grew on his chin. He had his
first romance-- and mother saw no more of him,
Except in glimpses now and then, quick hugs caught on the
Sly— out of view of all his friends--as the silver train sped by.
The silver train sped by, and the boy became a father
Mother blessed his baby and bid the boy goodbye.
The silver train sped by, and a man with gray-streaked hair
held tightly to the handles of his mother’s new wheel-chair.
Autumn rains were followed by winter's last goodbye
The man released his mother’s hand as the silver train
sped by.
Another babe kicked in the crib--the third child by
his bride. He dried a tear for mother as the silver train
sped by.
The silver train sped by, the babe kicked in the crib
Every time he cried--his mother tended him.
