Enterprise
Highly condensed, here’s the Genesis story so far -
Deceit, banishment, murder, wickedness, flood, curse, confusion, deceit, separation, war, jealousy, violence, outcry, destruction, incest, deceit, and expulsion. As a people, how are we doing?
To be fair, there are positive moments as well - Good, very good, rainbow, dominion, covenant, blessing, blessing, reward, covenant, rescue, blessing. Still, it looks like the bad outnumbers the good. This is why a chapter like this one is such a joy to read.
Here is an enterprise blessed and overseen by God. From the episode with Hagar, Abraham had seen that succession decisions were best left to God. So it was God who chose Rebekah and presented her to the servant, who then thanked God. The servant cited God as the source of Abraham’s prosperity. Laban and Bethuel acknowledged God’s hand in this. At the end, the servant again thanked God. They had a deal, and the wedding later took place. In all, the word LORD was mentioned 19 times in the chapter, and His presence was beautifully pervasive.
This is how an enterprise succeeds. It fulfills a purpose within the will of God. It begins with prayers of praise, supplication, and planning; it proceeds with prayers of praise, supplication and honest effort; and it ends with prayers of praise and thanksgiving. The enterprise succeeds best when God is a partner in every step. Going it your own way can never work as well.
