Arrogance
So, the people of Babylon wanted to reach right up to the heavens. A giant tower would show God who’s who. “Let us make a name for ourselves.” The people of Babylon wanted to honor themselves, not God. Do you hear an echo from the past: “your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God”? He’s baaaaack.
God took notice and put a halt to the city and the tower, but it was a lesson not learned. Ever since, man has tried to ignore, supplement, replace, or repackage God, or even declare Him to be dead. Here are some of their assertions and God’s answers:

WHAT IS THE VALUE OF MANKIND?
“Man is the measure of all things.” – Protagoras Abdera

“For if anything thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.” Galatians 3:3

ARE THERE ANY LIMITS TO MAN’S ABILITIES?
“A man can be as big as he wants. No problem of human destiny is beyond human beings. Man’s reason and spirit have often solved the seemingly unsolvable – and we believe they can do it again.” – John F. Kennedy

“All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; He does according to His will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. No one can restrain His hand or say to Him ‘What have you done?’” – Daniel 4:35

WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MAN’S DESTINY?
“We are fortunate; we are alive; we are powerful; the welfare of our civilization and our species is in our hands. If we do not speak for Earth, who will? If we are not committed to our own survival, who will be?” – Carl Sagan

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” – John 15:5

Where does this leave us? Are the preceding Bible verses saying mankind is of no value at all? Let’s go back at the beginning: “So God created man in His own image.” Anything created in the image of God is of immeasurable worth. The image can be tarnished and debased by the arrogance of mankind thinking it can ignore God and steer its own course, or it can be polished and kept bright by following some rather simple commands such as “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind” and “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37,39)
The people of Babylon could have built any tower they wanted, with God’s blessing, if they’d asked for God’s blessing. Solomon said it best: “Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it” (Psalm 127:1)
