Open the newspapers or switch on the television any day of the week and the news will almost certainly be full of violence and upheaval somewhere in the world. Bad news makes good copy and gets a bigger audience it seems, and very few people, we are told, are interested in the good news.

The malignant influence of all this is that most of the current role models on film or television are those who swear the loudest, create the most havoc, or get into the most trouble.

Happily, the men and women of violence are in the minority even though they get most of the media attention. Yet violence and hatred, by its very nature is doomed, for it ultimately will turn inwards and destroy itself.

The good news is that despite the plethora of doom and gloom, and while all this upheaval is going on around the world, grabbing the attention of the media, the dedicated men and women of peace are quietly going about their work of spreading the message of love, kindness and friendship.

It is very easy to feel aggrieved, to turn on somebody and complain loudly or criticize them when things seem to be going wrong. But in the end that will only hurt them and probably make an enemy of them. With tolerance and kindness we will surely have the chance to brighten our own life, and that of all those around us.

Even the smallest act of kindness can have a massive impact, for it can bring comfort and inspiration, and even happiness into someone’s life. If we live and act with kindness, it will cost us nothing, and yet the effect of each and every act will be multiplied many times over, and make a positive difference to each life we touch.
