Perseverance
A Bible text search for 'perseverance' didn’t turn up any from the story of Noah’s flood, and yet Noah faced and overcame testing in the extreme. From the moment he heard the words “Make yourself an ark”, until 120 years later, he cut, hammered, and pitched simply because God asked him to. No one had ever undertaken a project like this. Doubtless he heard the scoffers and mockers laugh at his boat, and not one of them believed him. Noah just kept building. Rain clouds threatened the land. Noah just kept loading. For 40 days, rain poured over the ark, and Noah just kept feeding the animals. After another 110 days the ark touched land, and Noah fed some more. 220 days later, the door finally swung open to dry land – mission accomplished.
Noah did this because his walk with God was more important than:
• The approval of his unbelieving neighbors
• “Common sense”
• House and possessions
• Ease, comfort, and convenience
Was Noah superhuman? By no means, as you’ll see in Genesis 9. But he had a call which he took very seriously. Since then, countless ‘Noahs’ have received calls, and many of these calls were received right from the pages of the Bible. “Husbands, love your wives.” “Train up a child.” “Be witnesses to Me … to the end of the earth.” “Take up the cross, and follow Me.” “Pray without ceasing.” There’s so much work to be done, and if you’re seriously studying this great Book, you’ve been recruited to help.
Perseverance is faith with legs. Whenever you’re tempted to give up, think of tireless Noah, “a just man, perfect in his generations.”
