Encouragement
It seems part of human nature to wait until some special event occurs before they decide to celebrate. Weddings, birthdays, Christmas, Easter, and a few other occasions will be an excuse to get in some drinks and tasty food, and then ask family and friends round to just get together and have a good time. That was really fun, they will say afterwards as the guests leave to head back home, just wait until the next time, then we will really have a ball.
Of course these are special events, and worthy of celebrating. As everybody knows Christmas is the time we acknowledge the birth of Jesus in a lowly stable in a far away country, and the birth of Christianity. With weddings we celebrate the union of a man and a woman in Holy Matrimony, and with birthdays we are acknowledging another significant milestone in a person’s life. But the question is – why should we celebrate only once or twice a year on these few occasions, why do we not celebrate every day of our lives?
We can celebrate each time we turn away from some pernicious temptation, when we hold our tongue and not speak harsh words about another. We should celebrate when we have lifted the spirits of someone who is lonely, or spoken words of comfort to those who are grieving. Not in a smug, self-congratulatory manner, but in the knowledge that we have spread some cheer among our fellow travellers through life.
By far the greatest gift that we all have is that we have been entrusted with the stewardship of our Mother Earth. Each new day, with the rising of the sun that spreads light and warmth across town and country, and with the peace and quietness of nightfall, gives us the opportunity to play our part in the greatest celebration of all – that of Life itself.
