Rabbit Hunting
My daughter and son-in-law had moved to Columbia, Mississippi where he was called to Pastor a small Baptist Church. They often came over after Sunday night services to eat leftover dinner with us. My two grandsons are ardent hunters and fisherman and often set around listening while I tell stories of my youth about hunting Rabbits with a carbide light. I told them that a Rabbit had been eating the vegetables in my garden and maybe we would go down there one night to see if we could shoot him. They had gotten smarter, or so they said, and would never get caught in another one of my pranks. These are the two lads of the snipe-hunting episode in an earlier story.
"Boys, I'm sorry about the snipe hunting prank I pulled on you"?
"That's ok Paw Paw. We're smarter than we were and wise to you and your pranks. You will never pull a trick like that on us again."
The setup--
After eating our meal we were sitting around the house just talking when I suggested that we go down in the garden, spotlight the Rabbit that has been eating my vegetables, shoot him, skin him, and then cook him! That seemed like a good idea to the boys.
The scheme unfolds--
I had previously enlisted the help of a friend who was waiting on the road that borders and parallels the back of my property. It was dark and the two snipe hunters, ah, grandsons were not aware of his presence. About halfway through the hunt things began to happen!
A big spotlight came on, a booming voice said "just stay where you are boys, I'm the game warden." I was standing at the edge of the garden and I felt this puff of wind as the boys made it to the back door of the house before the echo of the voice died down.
"DAD, DAD, it's the game warden!! He's after us for spotlighting a Rabbit. Honest Dad, we saw the jeep and the big light. We are in BIG trouble for shore."
My son-in-laws eyes were as big as saucers. Here he was, a Pastor of a local Baptist Church, and his sons going to jail for spotlighting Rabbits!!
Shortly after they reached the house a jeep pulled up into the front yard. The lights had been turned off in the house with hopes that the game warden would think no one was home. There was a rap on the door and there stood my friend with tears rolling down his face from laughing so hard. A sigh of relief was heard throughout the house and we all had a cup of coffee after the two "smarter now" teenagers settled down and recovered from the scare.
