The Scent of Worship
“But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of knowledge of Him in every place.” 2Corinthians 2:14
Thanks be to God Why? He leads us in a celebration of Jesus victory on the cross. When does He do this? Always Peter tells us to live in freedom, our freedom was paid for at a great price. Thanks be to God, we are no longer enslaved to sin. In 1 Peter 2:16, Peter tells us to live as if we are a servant to God. This is not because God feels we owe Him, it is because of the great love we have received from Him and want to return to Him. In caring for others we are to do this unto the Lord, as an act of worship. Psalm 50:14, 15 says “Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving and pay your vows to the Most High; Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I shall rescue you and you will honor Me.” So much of the time we give out of our excess. In this new season of economic difficulty giving of our time and money will be more of a sacrifice. As the world tightens their purse strings, Christian need to give more. The message we send is one of love and unselfishness.
One way of demonstrating this, is community service. Community service has become fashionable. The question is when serving whom do you serve? Scripture tells us to do acts of service in Jesus name. As His followers, we are to give to others in His name. This makes our service worship. Our service may meet an immediate need, but His love serves an eternal purpose. In our service we give a band-aid that points to Jesus, the healer. If we profess His name, we bring knowledge of Him. There is no greater act of service than presenting Jesus. When we serve in this manner, we bring His scent to the ones we serve. We open the door to His love. Don’t you want to emit a sweet aroma where ever you go? If we live in Jesus, we do.
