Wrapped up in your own small world,
Have you seen them on the street
(Although we prefer to pass them by)
Life’s ruins lying at your feet?
Hard lines etched upon each face,
Worn by heartache and disgrace,
Sighs of agony, unrehearsed,
Speak a life of want and waste.
Youth was spent in reckless haste,
This estate is now their curse.
Hear the chorus which they sing,
“Sometimes, life just hurts.”

Sometimes, it’s in your body,
When your back is aching sore;
Sometimes, it’s in your spirit
When you think you should do more.
Then there’s times when dreams
Are cruelly ripped apart,
Relationships fray at the seams;
And you’re left with a broken heart.
Gone your plans, gone your hopes
Life or death, which is worse?
When all seems so hopeless;
Sometimes, life just hurts.

Disease of physic or of mind,
Has caused many souls to fall behind.
Depression, fear, and anxiety
Seem common enemies to all mankind.
Let us not be quick to judge
Sorrows we have no knowledge of,
Have they fallen, have they sinned?
All can be restored in love.
Please do not offer platitudes,
Words that only make things worse.
It is what you do, not what you say,
Whenever life just hurts.

Reaching out to the homeless,
The weary and forlorn,
We desire to reveal our Savior
Though whom true Love was born.
Touching the untouchable,
We know His presence then
For wherever Love’s work is done,
God’s heart is shown again.
And on that day when He returns
When first are last, and last are first
How great His joy o’er those who cared
When life just hurts.
