Have you talked to your children about drugs? If you don't, the drug dealers and their friends will. Now, who do you want to have an on-going conversation about drugs with your children–you or people who sell drugs for a living?
Here are some tips on how to broach the subject with them:
1. Make it clear to your children that you don't want them using drugs. If you don't, you are leaving room for misinterpretation.
2. Discuss the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse often with your children. Repeating the message over and over again will help it sink in.
3. Encourage them to come to you if they have questions about drug abuse.
4. Answer your children honestly. If you have done drugs in the past, don't lie about it. If chose to lie and your children find out about it, you will lose credibility in their eyes.
5. Ask clarifying questions. Paraphrase what you children are saying to make sure you understand what they are asking. Limit your answer to information relevant to the question.
6. Introduce the subject naturally by using news reports, anti-drug commercials or school discussions.
7. Staying calm when discussing drugs with your children will put your children at ease. They will be more willing to talk to you about drugs if you don't react angrily when they make statements that challenge or shock you.
8. Pretend you are offering your children drugs. Practice ways your children can say "no" in every conceive situation.
Ninety-eight percent of American parents talk to their children about drugs. However, only one in four teenagers say they are learning a lot about the risks of drugs at home. So, isn't time that you talked to your children about drugs?
