Romans 13:11-12&14 – “You know what sort of times we live in, and so you should live properly. It is time to wake up. You know that the day of our redemption is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over, the day is almost here. We must stop behaving as people do in the dark and be ready to live in the light… Let the Lord Jesus Christ be as near to you as the clothes you wear. Then you won’t do what you shouldn’t.”
We live in immoral tines and our culture is sinking further with each passing day. It is more important that ever that the world sees us living out the truth with passion. We have been lulled to sleep by whatever comforts we happen to have and we have let our culture gently drift us downstream till there is little difference left between a “Christian” and what one might call a “virtuous pagan” – that is, someone who would generally be called a “good person”. This should not be so. “It is time to wake up.” Remember that even those things you do in the “dark” – in the “shadows” – when no one is watching and you think no one will ever know – you are still seen by God “for the darkness is as light to Him” (Psalm 139:12). We all know that this is true, but somehow it is forgotten in the moment of decision. If we could not only remember this truth, but also remember that God even lives inside of us by His Spirit (if indeed we are His) and is ever present within us – it would change everything. We ought to ask God to remind us of His presence before our every decision and action that we might take a second to pray for His help in all situations. This might be the last day for any one of us and it would be a shame if we wasted it. Now is the time for us to live in light of eternity. Today, let us get serious about living the life God has called us to – set apart for His glory. Determine to follow hard after Christ and to let Him guide everything you do and say. Keep close to God and He will help you and show you how to live. Then when your last day comes, you will not be ashamed or afraid (1 John 2:28), but you will rejoice in God your savior (Luke 1:47) who did amazing things for you and through you. In the meantime, live in anticipation of His return for truly that day is nearer now than it ever has been and the long night we’ve lived in will give way to a glorious dawn. Jesus says, “Yes, I am coming soon!” (Revelation 22:20) May we all be ready.
Let us pray, “Lord God, You are our light in this present darkness, illuminating our minds and hearts, giving life to our souls. We thank You for Your word which (by Your Spirit) guides us down the right path and shows us who You are. Help us to remember – to be constantly aware – that You are always with us and within us to give us the desire to obey You and the power to do what pleases You (Philippians 2:12-14 ). Lord, we desire to live every day in Your magnificent light, and for Your glory. Help us to do everything according to Your will. Oh, God, be nearer to us than our own skin and keep us from evil. Open our eyes, wake us up to live a life of passionate abandon for You. May we look to the future with joyful and expectant hearts, for the day of our redemption draws near. May we all be ready to live in the light of Your glory. Thank You for Your sacrifice that saves us. Thank You for making us Yours, for drawing us to You, and for living inside of us in the person of the Holy Spirit – for we know that we can do nothing without You (John 15:4-5). You are our hope and our life, our guide and our light. May Your name be forever praised, for You alone are worthy. Amen.
