What Will You Do
(When Jesus Asks Hard Things of You)?

We rejoice in His Mercy
His goodness and His grace;
We love to tell the story
Of how He took our place.
Supplying every need,
By His death set free…
How wonderful this promise:
He cares for you and me.

But when our path gets weary
And the road ahead is long,
When we trade our robes for rags
With weeping for our song,
Do we toss aside our first love,
Turn our backs and walk away,
Or choose Him over comfort
Through night as well as day?

And what will you do,
When Jesus asks hard things of you?

It’s a call all must answer,
A choice each must make;
Is our love for Him authentic
Or something that we fake?
If the trail that leads us home
Is strewn with trails and tears,
Can we keep our eyes upon Him
And turn deaf ears to fear?

Our Savior and Redeemer,
Provider and Sustainer,
Healer, Comforter, Teacher,
We extoll Your Holy Name.
How freely flow our praises
While dwelling in Your favor
As if all these blessings
Were somehow ours to claim.
But when the gift You offer
Is the chance for us to suffer
As a means to bring You glory
Your power to proclaim;
Unwilling to hear the question
Asked without pretention,
We close our eyes and ears
And turn away in shame.

“What are you going to do,
When Jesus asks hard things of you?”

In the end, all that matters
Is what we do with Christ,
And what can claim equity
With His great sacrifice?
So when the Spirit calls us
To leave all and follow Him
We should rejoice to obey,
And by loosing all, to win.
