Who could begrudge my sleepless nights?
Thoughts switching on and off like lights,
When rhyme and rhythm's not quite right;
There's naught to show for all I write.

Then like a flash from vacant space
The word I need falls into place;
Now suddenly my thoughts all race;
New lines are scribbled down in haste.

My heart exposed on open page,
Emotions bared to other's gaze,
Are lifted up by honest praise,
Or knocked down flat when one degrades.

In days long gone, while digging holes
Or fixing wires on lofty poles,
My inner self was not exposed;
Loved ones alone could see my soul.

This poet's heart is here displayed,
My thoughts before you clearly laid;
To speak God's truth I'm not afraid;
May He be praised by all I've said!
