Poetry
Playing with her paper dolls she named them every one.
Giggling and dancing in the Spring and Summer sun.
And many were the tea parties with her favorite teddy bear
and visits from the king and queen who lived in chocolate square.
And before those icky grade-school boys and cute ones in junior high
she grew to be quite lovely catching many a suitor’s eye.
And dreams, of course she had them - thinking of her years to come .
Thoughts of one day with a family, loving husband, happy home.
But the years, they come so quickly - life is tougher than our dreams.
And sometimes we must sacrifice for other’s needs, it seems.
And long before she planned it Fall and Winter settled in.
Arthritis took up residence, her eyesight growing dim.
The dolls and bears and tea sets left to yesterday’s museum
are now at the back of a dusty shelf where no one ever sees them.
But she wouldn’t go back for all the world or trade the life’s she’s known.
She’s cherished every tear she’s dried, hit every curve ball thrown.
Sometimes it’s hard to see our parents as people, just like us.
More than just our caretakers who put us on the bus.
Some day take a closer look into that special life
and consider there is more to see than simply mother, and a wife.
