Scripture reading: Genesis 5:18-24; I Timothy 5:22

There was a story told of a writer who visited a coalmine. Upon approaching the entrance to this mine, he noticed a perfectly white plant growing by the side of the entrance. The author and the other visitors with him were astonished that there, where coal dust continually blew and settled, this little plant would remain so pure and white.

As everyone watched, a miner at the site conducted an experiment by taking some black coal dust and threw it on the plant. To everyone’s amazement, not one particle stuck. The visitors decided to repeat the experiment. Each time, the dust would not cling. It seemed that nothing could stain the plant’s snowy whiteness.

This experiment illustrates what every Christian life should be like. We live in an evil world, surrounded by ungodly influences. Jesus admonished us to make it our mission to live pure lives, amid all the dirt and dust; to remain unspotted from the world, which we live today. How is this possible?

Enoch lived in the days before the flood, a time when “the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” (Gen 6:5) Yet the bible tells us that “Enoch walked with God three hundred years.” (I Tim 5:22)

If the Lord can keep a plant white as snow, amid clouds of black dust within our world, can He not by His grace, keep our hearts pure in this world of sin?
