Because you had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
You had a bad day
You had a bad day
Daniel Powter captures what many of us go through as we experience life. Lets just say I’ve been working on a smile all week now – except instead of a bad day – I feel like I am stuck in a revloving bad week. What do we do when we experience the valleys? When we long for a spiritual intimacy with God yet our emotions have left us void and hollow? I find my prayers are strained. My daily devotions feel like a well performed routine lacking in spirit. I know God is there, yet I can’t seem to grasp him. As soon as I get a small bit of peace – it seems to trickle through my fingers as if I had a handful of sand instead.
Where do you go from here? God has taught me through previous bad days ways to cope. First of all I believe when you can’t speak – God will. Thankfully when I feel distant from God – it is only a feeling. The truth is He is very near, even when my emotions slip me into the Emmaus Road trance.
Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him. Luke 24:13-15
I know Jesus is walking right along beside me, but yet I am having trouble recognizing Him. I must rely on the truth found in God’s word despite how I feel. Eventually I will find the peace to quiet my emotions so I can “feel“ his prescense again.
Let’s read on in Luke 24… “Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?"
Jesus knew that the hearts of these two men were troubled by all that had happened in Jerusalem. They had put all their hope in Jesus and then watched that hope be crucified upon a cross. Their emotions had blinded them to the very presence of Jesus in their midst. Jesus could of revealed himself instantly but he did not. Instead he carefully mended their brokeness, applying salves of scripture. Their hearts upon hearing the truth began to burn within them. It was only then that their eyes were opened and they recognized him. It was only then that they were able to feel once again that spiritual intimacy and their hope restored.
So when you have had a bad day – and your working at a smile – know that Jesus is there walking alongside you. Continue to apply salves of scripture to your broken heart, broken dreams, or whatever it is causing your weariness. It may take time, but eventually your heart will begin to burn and your eyes will be opened. Until then – you must trust in the truth – that He is there with you every step of the way.
