Poetry
All the days, Father,
all the days of my life,
I’ve lived by the flesh.
This can’t be life’s true nature,
for what have I truly achieved?
And I’m tired of this fleshly life
where I’ve made clothes, food, drunkenness,
a place to stay and jobs,
the most important thing in my life.
And really,
What is all of it worth?
It only helps fleshy life which is
but a breath:
You have made my days a mere handbreath;
The span of my years is as nothing before you.
Each mans life is but a breath. Selah (Psalm 39:5)
Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go
to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business
and make money.” Why you do not even know
what will happen tomorrow. What is your life?
You are a mist that appears for a little while,
then vanishes.” (James 4:13-14)
All men are like grass, and all their glory
Is like the flowers of the field,
the grass withers and the flowers fall,
because the breath of the Lord blows on them.
Surely people are like grass. (Isaiah 40:6-7)
My life could end at any moment,
and all these years
I’ve hidden in various places (parties, drugs, movies, etc.)
trying to escape the reality of death,
and its changed nothing.
Now, Father,
I pray for and seek a spiritual life;
one that will carry me on past the flesh.
If I die a fleshy death,
death will be eternal for:
The dust returns to the ground it came from,
and the spirit returns to God who gave it.” (Ecclesiastes 12:7)
Man is destined to die once,
and after that to face judgment” (Hebrews 9:27)
I have two choices,
People have two choices:
I can hide from deaths reality,
Or I can be honest and take to heart
that flesh is like grass.
I’ve been taught to prepare for education and exams,
business and taxes, careers, and retirement.
I ask, Father,
That you guide me and prepare me
for an event that is most certain – death.
This is most important and supercedes
all else I’ve prepared for.
“The world and its desires pass away,
But the man who does the will God
lives forever.” (1 John 2:17)
My fleshy life is fading day by day
And the life You offer through Your Son, Jesus,
is never-ending.
It is always whole, and always bright and fresh.
My flesh on its own
will never be good enough for Your kingdom.
“Flesh and blood cannot inherit the Kingdom of God,
nor does the perishable inherit the
imperishable.” (1 Corinthians 15:50)
Jesus said:
“He who believes in Me will live, even though he
dies;
And whoever lives and believes in Me will never
die.” (John 11:25-26)
This gift cannot come through fleshy birth,
It only comes from Your Spirit, Father,
and I must be reborn.
One birth is to die and
a second birth is to live forever.
So I accept the invitation You offer
to become a child of God.
…..Children of God – children born not of
natural descent,
nor of human decision or a husbands will, but
born of God.” (John 1:12-13)
Get me there safely, Father,
and please
get all others who seek this same invitation,
there safely as well.
I ask this in Jesus’ name,
Amen!
Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty,
Who was, and is, and is to come.
