Christian Garage Sales
One man's junk is another man's treasure. It's a famous phrase when you are in the process of selling all your unwanted goods that have built up over the years.
I am often thinking all the time of new ways to share Christ with others.
However, a thought came to me while planning to have our own garage sale recently. What a great way to share our faith with those who come to buy your 'treasures'.
I have been to many garage sales and have seen how people are treated. Mostly, they are treated well by the host, but just occasionally, there has been situations that would put me off from buying. We have also had a few garage sales ourselves and have seen how some people can abuse the privilege.
The thing to remember is that, whether you're renting or buying a house, your property is your private home and it needs your visitors to treat it with respect as you would do while on their property. Make sure people are clear as to what areas they are allowed into by securing off the areas that are out of bounds.
As Christians, we need to be 'His light" at all times, so what can we do to make a difference when we have a garage sale?
To prepare to be a witness for Jesus at your own garage sale first needs to be a joy for people.
'The christian image' is to be seen at first impression,...being what Christ taught, in behaviour and common courtesy. That means being honest, reasonably tidy, thoughtful and willing to give friendly, out the way assistance to anyone who come to your sale, including to children, while bearing a tolerance for people's different personalities, natures and attitudes.
So, you've had a good clean out and you have marked a reasonable price on the goods that you want to sell. What more can we do to share Jesus with our visitors? We definately don't bible bash people that i have seen some people do. It's a loving, caring approach that we need.
Here are some suggestions.
1. We can give out free invitations to come to church, or other christian event happening in town.
2. You can have a self serving stand with christian magazines, free dvds or videoes such as the 'Jesus video' or that your church or youth group may publish.
3. Offer to help with delivering heavy items if you have the means to do so.
4. Make your garage sale a pleasurable and comfortable environment.
5. Offer free coffee and biscuits or give out some treats to the children.
6. Dont have a garage sale on a Sunday.
You may have your own creative ways to spread the gospel at a garage sale. The important this is common courtesy and respect with friendly conversation that may lead someone to Jesus as their Lord and Saviour.
