Lesson name: The story of Jay Walker
Topic: Salvation
Synopsis: The story attempts to relate how salvation is attained in ones
life. It attempts to visualize man’s fallen state, recognition of sin,
the result of sin, the realization and answer of the sin problem. The
“roman road” is the platform the story uses and walks the children
through the scriptures at key points of the story and concludes with
a call to accept the gift of salvation.
Preparations
Print out the following scriptures.
Romans 3:23
Romans 6:23a
2 Peter 3:9b
Romans 6:23b
Romans 5:28
1 Peter 2:24
These will be folded and handed out to several children. Instruct the children not to open and read them. They will participate in the teaching and be called on to read their scripture during different points in the teaching. Please write down which child has which scripture so you can call on the right child.
Additional scriptures read by teacher at the end of lesson before salvation call.
Romans 10:13
Romans 10:9-10
Revelation 3:20a
Prepare a drawing of a street intersection shaped as a cross on the white board.
Cut out the following pictures to be used in the drawing
Bus, Traffic Light, a Boy, a Man
Encourage conversation throughout the lesson, but do not disrupt the rhythm and keep on the message of salvation so the content does not get lost going down long rabbit trails.
Point out the following observations about the drawing:
1. The streets look like the cross of Jesus.
2. When you write the words sin on the streets(the cross) this reminds us that Jesus died on the cross for our sins too.
3. The big bus represents eternal death.
4. The traffic light represents God’s words.
5. The street intersection by the traffic light(God’s word) where it is safe to cross the street is at the center(the heart) of the cross. The center of the cross is where we find the heart of Jesus Christ, the only way to heaven.
The story of Jay Walker
There once was a boy named Jay Walker. Jay Walker had a problem; He never crossed the street at the intersection by the traffic lights.
He always walked right out in the middle of the street, never looking, to cross over to the other side. This seemed to work just fine
for him and thought it was no big deal. One day when he was crossing at the middle of the street, he noticed a big bus heading right
for him. He froze and could not move. He was very scarred because he saw the big bus coming right at him and could not even move to
get out of the way. He closed his eyes and thought of all the times he crossed at the middle of the street and began to realize that
it was wrong. What was he going to do now? He was going to die for sure as soon as that bus got to him and it would be all his fault.
He thought to himself if I ever get out of this mess things will be different. Suddenly, out of no where he felt someone push him out
of the way. As he fell on the ground, he heard the bus pass right on by. I’m alive, he thought. I didn’t die! He was very happy and
he jumped up from the ground filled with relieve and excitement. But wait, he noticed a man laying in the street bleeding.
The man was dead. It was the person who pushed him out of the way of that bus. I never want to jay walk again, he thought.
He died so I could live.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We are all like Jay Walker.
Have someone read the below scripture.
Romans 3:23
All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God
What was Jay Walker’s sin in this story?
Jay Walking is against man’s law, just like sinning is against God’s laws.
What was Jay Walker’s attitude about jay walking?
No big deal.
Say, “this is a big mistake”
We all sin just as God’s word says in Romans 3:23. Jay has sinned and so have all of us.
Write the word sin on the street and say, “every time we walk in the middle of the street, like Jay did, we sin.”
Jay was right in the middle of the street, right in the middle of his sin. What did he see coming right at him? A bus
Have someone read the below scripture.
Romans 6:23a
For the wages of sin is death.
Write the word death above the bus and say, “when Romans 6:23a says death it means eternal death, a total separation from God,
this is called hell.”
How did Jay Walker feel when he saw that bus coming right at him?
He was very scarred.
What was Jay thinking when he was very scarred?
That it was wrong jay walk, it was wrong to break the law, it was wrong to sin. It was all his fault. If he could get out of this mess things would be different.
Have someone read the below scripture.
2 Peter 3:9b
God is not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
Write the word Bible above the traffic light and say, “Jay realized that if he would have used the traffic light he would have not been facing that deadly bus, eternal death. If we trust God’s word either will we.”
After Jay realized he was wrong and admitted it and decided to change, what happened?
Someone pushed him out of the way of the bus.
Have someone read the below scripture.
Romans 6:23b
the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Write the word Savior above the dead man and say, “When we believe that Jesus is our Savior, He will save us too.”
What happened to the person who pushed Jay Walker out of the way?
He died.
Have someone read the below scripture.
Romans 5:8
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Who do you think that person who pushed Jay Walker out of the way represents?
Jesus!
Have someone read the below scripture.
1 Peter 2:24
He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds(death) you were healed(saved).
Discussion Question
Do you think Jay ever wants to jay walk(sin) again?
No
Why?
Because that man died for him, just like Jesus died for you.
Do you think that Jay could be perfect and never jay walk again?
No, because no one is perfect and that is why we need Jesus, just like Jay needed that man.
The difference is you can always count on Jesus but you can’t always count on man.
How do you think Jay will feel if he does jay walk again?
Very bad
Why?
Because he will always think about that man who died for him, just like we should always think about Jesus who died for us whenever we sin.
Remind the children of the words sin you wrote on the streets and points out how the streets are shaped like the cross of Jesus.
Make the following observation about the drawing to the children.
The street intersection by the traffic light(God’s word) where it is safe to cross the street is at the center(the heart) of the cross.
The center of the cross is where we find the heart of Jesus Christ, the only way to heaven.
Ask all the children to bow their heads and close their eyes as you read the below scriptures.
Romans 10:13
"WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED."
Romans 10:9-10
if you confess with your mouth Jesus is your Lord and Savior, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
Revelation 3:20a
'Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in.
Say, do you hear God’s voice in your heart right now? Do you hear him calling your name?
If you believe that Jesus died for your sins and you never asked him into your heart and you want too, right now,
the only thing you need to do is just quietly raise your hand so we know who and your group leader knows who to talk too.
Can you do that for me right now? Great, that’s wonderful. OK open your eyes.
