Healthy Living
Ever wonder what satisfies the human soul-on a lasting basis? Ever consider what it would take to be at peace with your heart and stay that way in an ongoing style? We humans have three basic drives that know no satisfaction in this world. These drives are doing, having and being.
We have to do whatever our chief addiction says to. Our chief addiction is whatever experience tells us we are most satisfied to do.
It can be money, sex, drugs, gambling, racing, etc. But whatever it is, NOTHING in this world will hit the spot on a lasting basis. We can earn money, have pleasure, do drugs, go to the casinos, drive cars or whatever fast or look at it happening- and still feel empty inside. It's like throwing a penny into the Grand Canyon.
We can have the big house, the attractive successful spouse, the chic car, the nicest, smartest kids- and what's it all for? When does it come to having enough to feel good about?
We can be the richest, most successful, most whatever that we want to be and so what?
King Solomon had all that. He did the doing, was the richest of any ruler before or since his time, and had it all. But in Ecclesiastes 2:11 he had to admit that it just meant nothing. He uses the phrase "chasing after the wind". It's as if he had been pursuing something he knew he could never catch and hold.
Temptation is the opportunity to have illegitimate satisfaction of a legitimate desire. Whoah! Were we built with this package of drives that cannot be satisfied? No! We were built with this package of drives that cannot be satisfied in this world! Solomon uses the phrase "under the sun". The Creator, God, built this voracious group of desires to get us to seek Him, because only He can satisfy them to the fullest, most peaceful extent.
The three voracious drives are like anything else in our lives that brings stress to us- they were meant to drive us to seek the author of life, that He would take care of it all. It's God drawing us to Himself.
So take this stuff and shove it-into your prayer closet!
Tell me what you think, I'm just thinkin out loud!
