Brandy was our beautiful rescue dog who was a golden retriever/collie mix. Even as a puppy, her sweet disposition had already begun to shine. One Sunday afternoon, I prepared my usual pot roast dinner and put it in the oven and then went into the living room to read. “Brandy, stop it.” Calling from the other room, I assumed her barking was just setting her sights on chatting at the neighbor from the sliding glass doors near the kitchen. Her barking only got louder and more urgent. Like a parent who’s beginning to discern the meaning of the different cries of her baby, I quickly realized this wasn’t her usual bark and got up to investigate. Her little feet firmly planted, tail in the air, and her head down, she was frantically barking at the oven. Well, let’s just say Brandy got lots of spoiling and treats that day. She had alerted us to a fire in the oven that started from a faulty coil. My husband quickly put the fire out and Brandy instantly got a lot of hugs and our apologies!
Just like the warnings from my beloved pet, the Holy Spirit warns me when I’m in a situation or making a choice that will take me in the wrong direction. The voice of the Holy Spirit is quiet, and we need to be attuned to listening to the uncomfortable feelings, or our conscience, when we are in a situation. Don’t ignore those instincts, or feelings; they may be the voice of the Holy Spirit’s warning for you to stop and turn around! And just like I need to be alert to staying in my home while I run appliances such as the oven, and the washer and dryer, I also need to stay alert in my spiritual life. Satan is like a roaming lion, looking for who he can devour. With the help of the Holy Spirit and putting my armor on every morning, Satan will not devour me!
I Peter 5:8 “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”
Ephesians 6:10-15 “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.”
