The Psalmist David practically laid out the recipe for a gratifying and fruitful life in God in this Psalm. He details the actions that bring blessings and those that bring curses. He also describes the characteristics of those who do God's will and those who don't.

Psalm 1 verses 1 and 2 read "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly or standeth in the way of sinner or sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord and in His law doth he meditate day and night."

These two verses dissuade us from being counselled by ungodly people. It is known that ungodly people can only give ungodly counsel. In other words, counsel that is not of God and that will not reverence or glorify Him should be avoided/ignored.

Those people who walk in ungodly counsel will stand in the way of sinners. Some sinners will want to come to repentance and they will be prevented by the ungodly actions exhibited by those who are counselled and subsequently influenced by the ungodly.

David also warns against being scornful or judgmental. Firstly, I am reminded of another portion of scripture that states "all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God."

Secondly,we read about the woman who was caught in the act of adultery. Jesus invited those who were without sin to cast the first stone. It therefore behooves us to desist from judging others wrongfully. Jesus is the only righteous and true judge.

He encourages us to delight outrselves in the law of the Lord and to meditate upon it day and night. I know that this action will result in the development of a closer relationshiup with God and consequently produce fruits of the spirit in our lives. We will then be able to win followers for Christ.

This beautiful Psalm continues with a description of those who meditate on God's word and allow His Spirit to rule our lives. Verse 3 states "And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper."

The image described here gives the feeling of abundance and beauty. It suggests overflow and superfluous blessings to those who allow themselves to be guided by God's words and law. Positive fruits of love will be brought forth in the lives of God's modern-day disciples.

All in all, David gives a masterful description of the benefits of faithful christian living in three short verses of scripture.
