Shadowed Son

you Jesus
it was you who came
true light clothed in darkness--
so i could comprehend you
while i existed in false light
the only light i had ever known--
the black light which had given me
all the comfort i had ever asked for,
bargained for, stole and lied for;
would have died for.

the black light which teased me
like an uncle, neighbor or grandfather would--
naturally trusting in
never doubting the authenticity
of its love.

the black light which had never given reason
for me to lose faith in it:
always it gave the things which pleased me;
booze, drugs, popularity, success
and friends.

the black light gave me people...
a street car railing its way
down one long, wide street of fun
stopping frequently
to take on new faces with new smiles;
let off a few downtrodden people--
where they were headed i never asked
something inside me put me at ease
their destination was of no concern to me.
always there was the endless steel track
which guided the street car
always the conductor smiled
while exchanging pleasantries--
a gentleman. never did i feel awkward
never did it cross my mind to get off the car
never did i become bored:
always there were new faces
or exotic neon razzle dazzle
to become absorbed in.

the night was always as close as the sky
and i was always close to the night.

the black light never blinded me
but eventually i became unable to focus any longer
no longer could i discern who were my friends--
who were my foes
the faces and the smiles grew expressionless
the conductor now shouted profanities
the racy red, blue and silver aura became a molten
blend of ooze-- flowing hot and hellish from the core
of a volcanic nightmare...

my beautiful black light was at once exposed as black death!

you Jesus
it was you who came
true light clothed in darkness
that i might comprehend you!
