Family
When I was growing up, I loved to spend hours looking through the boxes of pictures kept in my mother’s closet. There were also several photo albums and scrapbooks, and while I enjoyed all of them, the first one I always picked up was my parents’ wedding album. More than just getting a kick out of the 1970s fashions, I treasured the feeling that came over me every time I opened it. A small album with only 20 pictures, it was my window into a time before I existed - a glimpse of the beginning of my parents’ life together and evidence of their love for each other. Even after I moved away, got married, and had kids of my own, I would still make a trip to that closet on my visits home – just to look at that special album.
My love of all things related to pictures and albums brought me to scrapbooking more than three years ago. A good friend invited me to a home class, and while I was thrilled to attend, I was sure I wouldn’t be getting involved. “Just a day out with friends”, I said. “I’m just not creative enough”, I claimed. The minute I cropped my first picture, I was hooked and could imagine all the possibilities of getting my pictures into albums. But it turned out to be so much more than making albums from my own photographs. My favorite projects have been those made for others: an ABC album for my young daughters, a family reunion album, an album of my brother’s life for his 30th birthday, and, my sentimental favorite, a wedding album for my parents. Yes, that album that I loved to delve into as I was growing up was literally falling apart – pictures yellowing and falling out of the mostly unattached pages.
My parents’ 35th wedding anniversary seemed the perfect time to present them with their own wedding pictures lovingly transferred to and preserved in a new album. My brother agreed it was a great idea and left me to my “creating”. After scanning all the original pictures and reprinting them, I created a simple but elegant wedding album, complete with all their photos, the words to “their” song, and a spot at the end for a “35 Years Later” shot.
The look on my mother’s face when she opened the album was everything I had hoped it would be as I created the pages. She couldn’t believe I had secretly taken her old wedding album and redone it. She also admitted that she had always been sad that the album was in such bad shape and was thrilled that it was now “beautiful”.
For me, this project became more than restoring an album. It became an act of preserving my family’s history and giving my parents a gift that will endure. Now we have the peace of mind that when my daughters and I want to look at that wedding album, it will be there, in one piece, waiting to tell us the story of my parents’, and our, beginning.
