Testimonies
From the time I was about 5 until I was 11 years old, I spent a lot of time with the Holy Women. These were the women in our town who helped the sick, delivered babies as midwives, and carried their big Bibles everywhere they went.
They worked diligently in the church and community.
Sometimes their worship services lasted from 9’O Clock am until 6’Clock pm on Sundays, with a break to be resumed at 8’Clock pm until around 11 or 12:00 am!
My mother did not mind them taking me with them because it was free babysitting for her.
She thought my grandmother and the rest of the Holy Women were a little rattled but when she was in distress like all of the others in the town, she made a bee line for their wisdom and counsel.
The Holy Women had prayer meeting every day in the church down the Street.
When they finished their morning chores and finished tending to their Truck Patches (gardens), they met at the church.
Many times they just sat still, without speaking. This silence sometimes went on for hours. (They said I was a good sitter. Most kids couldn’t sit still).
And so they sat with their Bibles opened, waiting.
At first, I asked my Grandmother what they were waiting for.
She said that they were waiting for Jesus. I wondered why it took so long. I was told that they were getting on one accord.
Often I would go to sleep on the pew. When I awakened the Holy Women would be singing a hymn or standing with their arms outstretched in praise, clouds of smoke all around them.
Later I learned that this was not smoke, but Shekina.
The Holy Women would petition God in behalf of all of the people in the town, especially the people who made fun of them on a regular basis.
The Holy Women prayed daily for the youth and the children and ask God’s divine protection for everybody.
One day the Holy Women anointed me with oil and declared that I was now a Holy Woman.
Great hot tears of distress began to run down my cheeks.
My Grandmother asked what was wrong. I looked at her long skirt, lace up shoes, and doily on her head and told her that I didn’t want to be a Holy Woman.
My Grandmother said, “Too late to cry. You’re already chosen!”
My Grandmother Parthena, and all of the other Holy Women were leaders and strong towers in the 60’s during a turbulent time of the Viet Nam War and so many other trials, nationally and internationally.
They were guides and mentors who showed us the way. Unlike them, I wear jeans and sneakers most of the time, but despite my clothing, I am still one of them.
