Short Stories
Esmeralda
Esmeralda leaned on her mothers shoulder as the Pastor continued his preaching. It was early Sunday mourning and Esmeralda would have rather stayed at home. But she knew it was her last Sunday with her mom before she left the next day to California and she wanted to say goodbye. The rain started to pour outside and Esmeralda was starting to drift away when she heard the voice. It was like a slight whisper in her ear that was carried in with the wind. “Don’t run” said the voice in such a gentle manner she thought she imagined it. But then it spoke again, “don’t run”. Immediately Esmeralda sat up straight and looked at her mother who was very concentrated on what the preacher was saying.
“Did you say something?” Esmeralda asked her mom. “What?” she responded. “Did you just say something to me?” Esmeralda insisted. “Honey the Pastor is preaching, we should be listening not talking.” Esmeralda suddenly felt uncomfortable and started to question her decision to leave home. She was too young and didn’t know what she was getting into. Her mom tried to talk her out of it but it was useless, her mind was made up.
Esmeralda landed on California soil the next day with her stomach full of jitters and her mind filled with dreams. She was going to become a famous singer or actress. She knew she had the talent. Every one at church told her so. “You’re going to do great things for God with your talents” her mom would say. But she didn’t just want to sing at church she wanted to be recognized by everybody, be on television and make lots of money.
This is where Esmeralda got lost, where she got confused and started listening to a different voice. Different from the one she heard at church that wet Sunday mourning. This voice sounded just like hers, it was so similar to her voice that she confused it with her thoughts. It was an angry and frustrated voice that after a while made her believe she wasn’t a good enough singer or actress an if she pursued that pipe dream she would starve to death. But of course the voice convinced her that there were many other easier and fun ways to make money and this is when she met Tom.
Esmeralda was bar tending when she met Tom. He was very handsome and a smooth talker. It seemed he always knew the right thing to say at just the right time. His lifestyle was what Esmeralda’s mother would warn her not to do. But yet he seemed so happy and was such a cool guy it made Esmeralda thinks maybe my mom is just old and doesn’t understand how to have a good time… but Tom certainly does.
The first time Esmeralda stepped into a strip club was with Tom. He wanted to try something different and she wasn’t about to ruin it for him, because even though deep inside she felt it was wrong, she also felt she loved him. Because she felt loved by him.
Esmeralda’s heart was out in the open and it got crushed. Tom broke up with her. She became ill with some sexually transmitted diseases and developed a drug habit of marihuana and cocaine.
It was rainy day when Esmeralda heard the voice again. This time she was alone in her room crying, asking God why she had to suffer so much. The tears were pouring harder than the rain outside, she was on her knees crying for help when suddenly she felt a chill deep in her chest before hearing the words “I will heal you”. The pain stopped and Esmeralda felt as if time had just stood still. She immediately recognized it was the same voice she had heard that Sunday mourning before she left and started to cry even harder. But this time it was a cleansing cry, a cry of joy and not of agony because she had received a promise.
Esmeralda kept on her knees, but now she was calm with a slight smile on her face. “This time I won’t ignore you Jesus, thank you for not forgetting me Lord.” The conversation between Father and daughter lasted all night. By early afternoon of the next day Esmeralda was on a plane back home.
She broke her drug addiction and her last test for STD came out negative. She was healed and now works to help others in their relationship with God. Every now and then the angry and frustrated voice tries to confuse her again, but this time it is so distant and broken up she pays no mind to it. But stays very well tuned to the voice that nurtures her and loves her so deeply that even though it hasn’t spoken directly to her since that night in her apartment, she can feel it deep inside herself.
