THE MIRACLE AT CANA
John 2:1-11 (NIV)

The Miracle at Cana, has profound significance in context with our changing times when we often ask for a miracle in the world at large and in our lives in particular. I begin today by taking a look at this first miracle performed by Jesus; as not only a lesson on Mother Mary’s divine intercessory Power; but also as an eye-opener for many of us who at one point or another in each of our lives have prayed for a miracle and have met with varied results.

Let us picture the scene of the wedding at Cana in Galilee, where Jesus has been invited with His disciples, and where His Mother is there as well.

When the wine is over, Jesus’ Mother says to Him : “They have no more wine.” He replies, gently reminding her : “Dear Woman, why do you involve me? My TIME has not yet come.”
PROFOUND. Though it is not yet time for Him to work, he answers her request with a Miracle!!!

When she heard him say those words, she would have perhaps smiled to herself, (knowing that soon there would be a solution to the problem!) and then walks over to the servants and tells them : “ Do whatever He tells you.”

You want a miracle in your life; you know exactly where to begin! Yes undoubtedly, as St. Don Bosco urges us : To Jesus Through Mary! But once we go to Mary she in turn tells us: “Do whatever He tells you.” Are we ready? Are we willing? Do we have the courage to do whatever He tells us? Now that’s a Mighty Task but not impossible.

When I pray I ask for the wisdom to be able to realize He has spoken to me, like the servants at Cana, who heard, listened and obeyed. Yes, I may not always hear what I would want to hear. Once I hear, I pray for the courage to be able to do whatever it is that He asks me to do!! Remember, at Cana, they had run short of wine, not water!! Yet, He asked the servants to fill the jars with water and that too those jars which usually held water for ceremonial washing. Now all this was somewhat ambiguous at that time, if we were to put ourselves in the servants shoes. “Why water,” we might have asked Him “ the wine is over, don’t you need some fresh grapes to make the wine, we’ll go out and get some”, we might have suggested to Him “…and these jars, they are not used for wine!” we may have hesitated. Preposterous, you say!! well most often we are just that!! We assume we know exactly what is required and exactly how it has to be done!! It is this attitude of ours and lack of trust, which gets in the way of most miracles in our lives.

He often speaks to us, He waits for us to hear, listen, obey and cooperate with him to perform the miracle. We may find, what He asks for is quite insignificant, quite irrelevant. Yet, it is the most smallest of jobs, the most simplest of things that have the ability to affect major ones.

When I ask for a miracle, I first believe that it will be done. No, it is not a positive attitude!! It is based on the fact that The Lord himself has said in the Bible Luke 11:9-10 : “Ask & you shall receive, seek & you shall find, knock & it shall be opened unto you.” When I ask, I know He will grant it to me, I only have to realize my role, what I need to do to set the miracle in motion. Whether like the servants at Cana, I need to fill the jars with water or whether I follow His instructions to have it tasted by the Master of the Banquet; I just have to fulfill my part. The Lord further urges us in Luke 11:11-13, to ask for the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit, I believe is the source of all the best gifts ever that one could get!!

There are miracles in our daily lives that go by unnoticed, the small, tiny ones; they in no way are any less significant than the ones we are praying for. Do we stop to realize those miracles that occur each day and Thank the Lord for them? I ask The Lord for the grace to realize those small miracles and Thank Him for them.

Most miracles are just waiting to happen, if only we would cooperate with The Miracle Worker and do whatever He asks us to, with the solid conviction that once we ask Him through the intercession of Mother Mary, He surely will answer us. Let Him take His time, Let Him have His way, Let Him take complete control (He has given us a Free Will and unless we ask, will not use us as His instruments!). He works quietly and subtly each day, while we run around busy trying “to set things right” blatantly ignoring His presence right amongst us, trying to avoid hearing what He actually may want us to do; so that we don’t actually have to do it!!! That’s Preposterous I would say.

Here, I ask The Lord to grant us the humility, courage, perseverance, patience & self-control, to do whatever it is that He wants us to do. Once He takes over, I know that the Miracle we are asking for is just around the corner!! Thank you Lord.
