For the next couple of days, that was all that consumed their group of friends. How were they going to deal with it if Renee had to leave for Paris? Even for one year?
“I heard they don’t even shave their armpits there,” Shay had said, scowling. It wasn’t fair that she had to leave.
“Still, we don’t know for sure yet,” Renee said. “I’ve asked my parents about it every day now, and they don’t know if he’s getting the promotion or not. He said that there is another guy they are considering that is single, and so they may choose him because he could stay there longer.” Still, the thought haunted them until Friday when they all loaded up in Mrs. Williams’s car to head to the lake house.
As soon as they got in the car, all thoughts of Paris dissolved. They were going to the lake, and they didn’t want to complain the whole way there, especially with Mrs. Williams.
The three hour car ride went by in a flash, and when they got there they stopped at Sonic. The Sonic near Renee’s lake house wasn’t just any old Sonic, though. This Sonic had a bounce house, beach volleyball court, and playground. After eating, they played around for an hour before getting into the car and heading to the lake house.
It was dark by the time they got settled in there, so after talking for a while, they popped in a movie, appropriately names The Lakehouse. The movie was sad, and Shay was wiping a falling tear away when she noticed something out of the corner of her eye. It was late, and she was tired. So when she noticed the little thing, it didn’t register with her at first. In fact, she watched it as it ran back and forth at the top of the window. She must have watched it for a minute when it suddenly hit her.
“IT’S A SQUIRREL!” Shay yelled and pointed to the little furry thing that had stopped, frozen possibly by the sudden noise. It took a minute for the girls to tear themselves away from the movie. Then, Kelly and Katherine jumped up from their place on the floor and started to back up to the couch. “Mr. Williams!” Kelly screamed.
A groggy Mr. Williams came down the stairs. “What?” he said. Shay could easily guess he had been asleep.
They all pointed to the squirrel that had resumed its running back and forth on top of the window.
Mr. Williams gave them an exasperated look as he went to the kitchen to grab the broom. He came back and whacked the squirrel. It seemed to fly to the ground, landing no farther than three feet away from Beth.
Everyone started screaming at once, and they were suddenly all on the tiny chair farthest away from the squirrel. They continued screaming while Mr. Williams chased the squirrel around the room.
When it behind the TV right next to the chair, Mr. Williams turned to the girls. “Would you girls please shut up?” Everyone got silent. Shay willed herself not to pee in her pants.
For a moment, everything was dead silent. Mr. Williams started to move the TV, and the squirrel darted right behind the chair when Shay felt it. The chair was tipping. It happened slowly, but in a matter of seconds, everyone was on the ground, once again screaming at the top of their lungs. Shay was at the bottom of the pile, but she could see the poor squirrel run away from the collapsed chair as the girls all struggled to make it to the couch.
They continued screaming until Mr. Williams finally shooed the poor thing out the door. Then he looked at the girls. At first, he just smiled, but his smile turned into a snicker, which turned into full blown laughter. The girls all soon joined him. “Man, that made me week,” he said as he turned to go back upstairs. “That chipmunk was ten times more scared of you than you were of him.” He kept chuckling to himself as he went upstairs. Only then did Shay realize she had peed in her pants.
