ODIETTE
Odiette, why do you cry?
wipe the tears from your eyes,
why do you grovel in the dust?
Who told you that the end of the world has come?
Yes you lost your son; he was slaughtered before you during the war.
Yes your husband was shot when he tried to shut your door and stop the invaders from entering your home.
Odiette they took your daughter, her bludgeoned body was found three miles away.
They took you to the camp for female slaves and your body was ravaged by dirty men, men who have not had their bathe for years.
Men who slept with cockroaches and ate rodents and raw grass for lunch.
Odiette you are sad, so sad.
Life has dealt you a blow you cannot recover from; maybe you can you think, but you do not want to.
You cannot afford to. It would be a sin, a desecration to those you hold dear, those who are dead.
Odiette stop weeping, stop crying, and stop dying.
The pain is eating your heart out.
See the deep set jowls round your eyes; it can hold enough water to bathe a three year old child
You skin is chaffed and paled; one would think that the heat from the sun fried it.
The heat is internal, the hate you bear in your heart towards your captors,
towards your detractors, towards those who made you cry.
Odiette wipe the tears from your eyes.
You ask me why?
Why?
Can’t you see, they hurt your body, but it’s your soul no one can kill?
Odiette, you are alive,
You survived
How many did?
Do you think that you can’t pick up life’s pieces because the shame and the agony caused the glass to shatter, shatter to pieces that can not be picked any more?
Odiette look,
yes look at that young girl passing by,
yes the one with the pot on her head, limping as if she has a bucket between her legs,
she too survived.
Did you hear what they did to her; she was raped over and over again till her underneath tore into shreds.
That young girl will never be able to give birth.
Do you know why there is a pot on her head?
it has beans in it; beans that was been washed, beans which will be ground into a smooth paste and steamed and given to broken hearted women and children to eat.
Look at her hands closely, her right fingers are chopped off completely, when she came to me she was still bleeding.
They cut her fingers when they tortured her, they tortured her mind and body because, they said she was a cockroach; she was not fit to live. Her life was made that of those dark skinned stinking insects.
She was reduced to nothing.
She slept naked for two months, no warm clothing to shield the torture of the rain and male flesh?
She is on her way to provide food for her mates.
She was glad she did not die when she came to our camp.
When she heard about atrocities worse than what she went through,
she found a reason to live on.
Odiette it is your turn, take your place, stop groveling in the dust.
Women here have gone through worse.
Wipe the tears from your eyes Odiette; don’t let your enemies see you cry.
You are still beautiful inside, you are unique, and you have something to offer and so much to give.
There are children, whose mothers were killed, how can you call your self childless?
Look at the young women whose husbands were brutally murdered like goats, how can you say that you are alone?
Get up woman you are stronger than you realize.
Help these people get their life back together; Odiette there is every need to survive.
Now is your time,
Your head is telling you lies
Listen to your heart Odiette
Hope lies ahead
It’s not over yet.
