Throughout the Bible, we are encouraged to honor our father and our mother. (Exo. 20:12; Deut. 5:16; Eph. 6:2) While I was growing up, I was blessed with two wonderful parents. With Mother's Day coming up, I would like to fulfill half of the above commandment.
When I was two and a half, the Lord saw fit to bless my mom with twin boys. Along with me, she already had a one and a half year old son. Her responsibilities not only doubled, but none of us were potty trained yet either. Some days it seemed like, she would no more get out of bed, and the next thing she knew, dad was coming home from work and it was time to fix supper. So she decided to write down all the events of the day in order to find out where all her time went. After filling up a page and a half, my mom finally gave up, and it was only eleven o'clock in the morning.
It would be three years later that our family would be completed with the arrival of my youngest brother. Being true to our gender, we did boy things. Like the day when two of my brothers declared their bedroom a fort and dared us to enter it. Well, we successfully breached their defenses by running a bunk bed rail all the way through the hollow-core birch door.
Then there was the time, I was an Indian, and had the cowboys hot on my trail. To escape, I turned into the garage. Then on a dead run, I dove through the bottom pane of glass in the storm door in the back of the garage. With shards flying all around me, I rolled down the concrete steps in true John Wayne style and landed on my feet without a single scratch.
Despite the fact, we were all well on our way to juvenile delinquency, my mom took the time to learn each of our strengths. As we grew, she encouraged us to our talents in constructive ways. Because of her patience and perseverance, my brothers are now an engineer, a computer programmer, a bus mechanic and a purchasing consultant.
You know what. After remembering everything she had to put up with, forget honoring. I'm nominating her for sainthood!
