Hopeful Frailty 6 - Study Questions for Week 3
Due to lengthiness of study questions this time, I am breaking lesson into three parts.
“… out of their weakness were made strong…” Hebrews 11:34
Renewing the Mind - Think on Corinthians 1:30-31 this week:
“It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God - that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.” (NIV)
This is a great verse to memorize. Think on the words “in Christ Jesus” and what those words represent. You may want to read Ephesians 1:3-13 as a companion passage to the one above - and highlight how many times the verse in Ephesians mention the words “in Him or “in Christ.”
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places "in Christ:" according as He hath chosen us "in Him" before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love: having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, wherein He hath made us accepted in the beloved. In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace; wherein He hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence; having made known unto us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He hath purposed in Himself: that in the dispensation of the fullness of times He might gather together in one all things "in Christ," both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in Him: In Whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of Him who worketh all things after the counsel of His own will: That we should be to the praise of His glory, who first trusted "in Christ." In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in Whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise…” (KJV)
1. What truth or scripture was significant to you this week?
I Samuel 17:28-30, especially v. 30a. I found David’s ability to stay focused deeply stirring for personal application. His brothers disdained and mocked him, but he did not allow their words or countenance to distract his aim or become a discouraging factor making him feel too ‘small’ for the job. The reason for this is David did not place his confidence in his own flesh but in the mighty God of Israel. David's example becomes life-changing for me when I ask certain questions.*
How easily am I distracted from doing what the Lord has set before me because I desire more to do my own will than His? How much do I allow the world and its demands to rob me of eternal pursuits, my heavenly treasures? How quickly am I discouraged from following my calling because of the opinions of others? *
2. How have your thoughts changed concerning your weaknesses this week?
My own weakness used to put a damper on my spirit. Even though I had head knowledge 'grace is where I stand' as a Christian, my heart felt condemnation when faced with its imperfections.
With God’s help I am learning to see my weakness as part of God’s loving, purposeful design - that He made me clay flesh in order that His glory and strength might be made perfect in my weakness.
What a mystery and a paradox: it is good for me to be weak! Not that it is good for me to sin, but that it is good for me to know that my old nature will gain dominance if I do not continually look to the Lord for strength. I am totally dependent on God’s grace, glory, and power.*
I Cor. 1:21 “For after that in the wisdom of God, the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.”*
3. In 1 Corinthians 1:18, Paul tells us the message of the cross is foolishness to the world but it is the power of God to those who are saved. When you read of Christ’s death on the cross, how do you see the power of God displayed? (You can use any scriptures that are applicable, but here are a few to get you started.)
a. John 18:3-11
Jesus walks forward in obedience to the Father toward his would-be captors, allowing them to take Him. He had won victory already (power over the flesh) in prayer to the Father, not by His own (fleshly) valor. Previously He had told His disciples,* “The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” He knew whereof He spoke!*
b. John 18:33-37
Jesus always speaks truth (He is truth personified) and He does so to Pilate in this instance when asked if He is a king:* “To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.” (KJV)
d. John 19:28-30.
The soldiers fall backward to the ground when Jesus says, “I AM HE.” This is a demonstration, a sign of who He is and His ultimate total sovereignty over all matter.”*
e. John 20:1-10
Jesus has power to bring prophetic utterance to reality in the present.*
f. Luke 22:39-44
Jesus waxes mighty in the power of God in His agony of temptation.*
g. Luke 22:47-53
Jesus heals servant’s ear; also power of darkness shown in contrast to Jesus’ power of light.*
h. Luke 22:66-71
Jesus declares Himself as the Son of God.*
i. Luke 23:6-12
Jesus declares His kingdom and affirms Himself as King.*
j. Luke 23:32-47
Jesus here states an awesome truth that any power we see demonstrated here on earth has been filtered through the Father's fingers.*
k. Luke 23:46-53
Jesus accomplishes His Father’s will,* “It is finished.”
