The Mysteries of Love


Love like air is very free
Soars above the tallest tree;
And with wings no one can clip
Flies beyond all bars and grips


Love has climbed the highest hills
Which defied most strong men’s will
And has won the toughest fights
Which have sapped most warriors might


In its hands is peace to raise
For everyone to embrace;
At its sight men’s pride gives way
And its breath drives grief away


Love does not know the borders
Brings friends and foes together
Keeps all harms under its arms
And all flaws beneath the floor


At its words,
Men drop their swords
And only its soft whispers
Melts the hearts of cruel masters


Where loud cries and shouts have failed
Its gentle voice has prevailed;
And even its silent plea
A devil himself could heed


Love with ease brings down the high
And with strength lifts up the low;
Prince and paupers together
Wine and dine right on its palm
