Sam was a black and white cat that was once a member of my family. As cats are wont to do, she would sleep wherever it appealed to her...the bed, the linen closet, a box, a bag, a dollhouse. One winter I decided to plant a flat of seeds indoors in anticipation of my spring garden. As the seeds started to sprout I placed the flat by a sunny window, only to discover that another cat of mine, Streak, found this bed of soft seedlings in the warm sun to be an excellent bed of her own. So much for my plants!

As for Sam, at one point she decided that an end table with a touch-lamp was an excellent place to sleep. Of course, every time she leaned against the lamp it would go on, go off, or change lighting level. One day, as Sam was lying next to the lamp, I petted Sam and discovered that as I petted her, the lamp's lighting would change, as if I was touching the lamp itself. This became a wealth of amusement for the family...pet Sam and watch the light change. Naturally, this worked only if the lamp was plugged into the outlet...the source of electrical energy. It also worked only with a living cat...it would not work with a stuffed animal.

Like Sam, our lives are energy. We are to be lights in this world, yet we ourselves are not the Source of this light. When we choose to lean against the Lamp of the Christ and be touched by the Spirit, our lives can be a conductor for the Divine energy of the Creator that manifests the glory of God.

Revelation 21:23b …for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. (NIV)
