And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew. So when they had rowed about five and twenty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid. But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid." John 6:18-20

"It is I, be not afraid." In the midst of the upheaval, when we can barely recognize our Lord is present with us, he says, "It is I, be not afraid." By his word he identifies himself. "It is I," and if we know that "I" intimately, then that word should be sufficient to anchor us, however boisterous the storm. "It is I", -how personal! how precious!
But he goes beyond making himself known to his loved ones. He offers the comfort that only he can give..."be not afraid". Many fears assail us, each as unique as the individual that they seek to drown, but he throws out the lifeline in these six saving words..."It is I, be not afraid."
So, in another's words, "there is nothing to fear but fear itself", lest it drive us away from, rather than to, the only safe haven in the storm, Jesus Christ. "Then they willingly received him into the ship" (vs.21), which was the result of hearing those words, "It is I, be not afraid."
