This was not like any other day. We had all been crossing the Sea of Galilee recently and then people started to swarm us from all directions. Who knows who had told them and where did they all come from? They must have heard of all the miracles that He had performed on all the sick people. The rumors must have started.
He had started to climb one of the mountain sides to get a better view and also to get an opportunity to speak to us more privately, I could see that He was scanning the crowd, His eyes filling with compassion.

Turning to Philip He asked him where we could buy bread for all the people.
Boy was I glad that He didn’t ask me. I mean, it looked like more than five thousand men were there, plus all the women and children!
Was He crazy? Where would we be able to find baker out here?
Even if we did find a baker, would he be able to bake enough bread for all of them in just a short moment? I don’t think so!
Philip, always switched on when it comes to finances told Him that this kind of meal would possibly add up to more than eight months wages. Who got that kind of money?

During this bizarre conversation I notice this little boy coming towards me. His eyes filled with sparkle as he drops a little parcel into my hands. ‘Here, please, you can have it. Open it up, it’s for you’ he whispers to me, grinning from ear to ear.

I quickly unfold the small piece of cloth and discover five small loaves of bread and two small fish. My heart sinks. Into my hands have been given the smallest meal I had ever come across it seems. With the crowd surrounding me on every side, I feel that I am holding just a small crumb in my hand.
Beside me, the little boy is jumping up and down with excitement by now. I don’t dare to look at him; I’m just staring at this ‘crumb’ in my hands. Oh boy, what do I do? Everyone is waiting. “Well”, I start. “Here is a boy with five barley loaves and two small fish, but this won’t go far with so many here.” I continue, wondering what on earth He will say now.

‘Have them sit down, He tells us. What? He wants everyone to sit down, like for a meal? But all we got is this I try to tell him. He calls me over to give him the ‘crumb’.
For some reason I feel so relieved to hand it to Him, like a big weight comes off my shoulders, I can’t describe it any better than that. He then gives thanks to His Father, brakes it into pieces and tells us to distribute it to the crowd.

I don’t dare to speak; instead I accept a basket and start sharing it with the group closest to me. As I share, a strange thing is happening; it doesn’t seem to run out. The pile in my basket looks like it stays the same. It’s hard to believe at first, but the others seemed to have the same experience! Wow, this is amazing!

I can hear people around me talking about Him being the Prophet that we all been waiting for. Yes, they are right; I sense it in my being. He must be the One.

The little boy that gave me his lunch have been running up to me the entire time looking down my basket with the biggest grin on his face, screaming; ”My lunch is multiplying, my lunch is multiplying!” He finally plummets down into the grass, flat on his back but with the biggest grin on his face.

I also finally find myself a spot to rest. We have just picked up twelve baskets full of leftovers, every one in the entire camp are completely full.

I close my eyes for a moment and dream back to the day I met Him. Simon my brother and I was with John the Baptist that day. John had already told us about Him and when we finally saw Him there, we were drawn to Him in a way I can’t describe. I remember that He asked us what we wanted and all we could say was: “Teacher, where are you staying?” and then He told us to come.
Boy, am I glad we came!
