I inherited some items from my grandmother and in the collection is a Mexican pottery, a plate, which is 10 inches tall when placed on a plate holder. The ceramic plate is in a round shape, circa 1530 A.D. It is in excellent condition; no cracks, breaks, chips or stains. Painted on the back: “Juan Emilez, 1530” with the Mayan symbol of the sun.
A brief history of the Mexican Mayan pottery of this era: During the late Post Classic Period (A.D. 1200-1530), Puntan Maya traders frequently visited the Mesoamerican areas in large canoes. These visits led to many discoveries of the area which permeated their way of life including their artwork such as in this piece of pottery. During the period in which the pottery was created society had gone through a change due to their victories in battles and wars. Society was now militaristic and the artwork was influenced by ceremony, conquest, and civic and social organizations.
The plate has detailed pictures which depict every day life during this time. Painted illustrations on ceramic include enormous Mayan structures next to tiny humans performing routine activities such as fishing, boat building, recreational activities, and their worship of God.
The plate most likely was used not only for display but in serving local fruit such as oranges, limes and grapefruit since these were plentiful and readily available. Avocadoes may have been served as the vegetable of choice. History reports that these people loved to display their creations so it can be assumed that the plate served practical and decorative uses.
As you can see in the photograph, there are many different colors on the plate. The Mexicans enjoy color as their world is filled with the vibrant hues of the Caribbean. Color ideas come from their surroundings, especially from the sea and the fish that inhabit the waters. Some fish have as many as twelve different color patterns and these patterns can change in a matter of seconds! So you see, color is probably the most well known feature of Mexico and the Caribbeans next to their rich history.
As I have traveled to the area where this plate originated many times, I know that the people take great pride in their natural resources and what they have. From their artwork to their jobs, no matter how menial and tedious, they focus on every detail. Compared to what we have materialistically, they have so little but value it ever so much more. This is truly revealed in the beautiful plate you see in this auction. You too will take pride in what you have by owning such a magnificent piece of art and history.
