Short Stories
And yet another excerpt from the ebook, "Whispers" - featuring the angel Max...
----------
Jim's head was on his desk.
The girls kept looking at each other, not quite sure if they should say anything else or not. They remained silent.
Slowly Jim lifted his head. He stared into space, looking right through the girls. He took his hand and rubbed his eyes, then his forehead. His hand made it to the top of his head, where he ran his fingers through his hair, messing it up. He didn’t seem to care. Finally, his head landed back on his desk.
Thump!
Ouch. That had to hurt.
The girls had no idea what to do.
A knock on the door caused Jim to lift his head again. “Now what?”
“I saw the door open and thought I’d come in. Mind if I sit down?”
The girls continued to look at each other. Jim shook his head. “Should have known.” He looked at the girls. “Not to worry, he's a friend.” He turned to the friend. “Maybe you could shed some light on all of this?”
Max smiled as he took a seat. “What would you like to know?”
“Oh, I don’t know. Let’s try…who are you?”
“I thought you said I was a friend?” Max smiled.
Jim was growing tired of all the smiling. “You’re not going to make this easy, are you?”
“Actually, I am.” He looked at Alicia and Sally. “I’m Max, by the way.” He held out his hand and the girls responded. Max turned his attention back to Jim. “Okay, what’s seems to be the problem?”
Jim laughed out loud. “You’re kidding, right? I’ll tell you the problem.” His voice was getting louder with each word. “I’m hearing whispers, my wife is hearing whispers, and my friend (Jim put emphasis on the word friend) is hearing whispers. And now I find out that these two are hearing whispers.”
Sally lifted her hand. “Actually…just Alicia.” Jim turned to Sally, and the look he gave her caused her to slowly lower her hand. Still, she continued talking. “No whispers for me. Just…Alicia. Not me…Alicia…”
Jim continued to stare at Sally as he addressed Max. “Okay, so there’s at least one in this room who hasn’t gone completely crazy.”
It was Alicia’s turn. “You and Mrs. Mitchell have been hearing whispers?”
“Oh, yeah. We’re all part of some club, I guess.”
Max waited for Jim to settle down. “Are you done?”
Jim thought about it. “Not sure, it’s early still.”
Now they all smiled.
“Jim. I know this has been hard on you.” He turned to the girls. “On all of you.”
“Actually,” Sally smiled. “I’m having a great time.”
Jim’s ‘look’ returned. Sally’s smile disappeared.
Max. “Jim, you’re going to have to lighten up a bit. You’re right, the day is young.”
Jim took a deep breath. “I’m sorry. It’s just that, this morning, with Cindy in the hospital…then to find the gym like we did…”
Alicia. “Mrs. Mitchell was in the hospital?”
Jim. “She’s okay. Doctor said it was just stress, and I think I’m beginning to see why.”
Pressure release valve opened, and they all laughed again.
Jim turned back to Max. “Okay. Now, how can you help us? You said it was going to be simple, right?”
Max. “It is simple. And the funny thing is, you’re the one who’s had the answer all along.”
Jim’s face lit up. “I have?”
Max nodded his head. “You’ve said it yourself – all you need to do is trust in God. He’s been with you through this so far, and he’ll continue to be there for you.”
Jim seemed back to his old self. “Okay. So if that’s all there is to it – and I hear you – I know that’s all there is to it, then, why are you here…in my office, now?”
“Let’s just say…sometimes we have to be reminded that Jesus will never leave us or forsake us. We get so far away in our walk with the Lord that we forget that he’s always there, ready and willing to go with us, to help us.” His voice took on a serious tone. “Even…in our darkest hour.”
Jim. “That dark hour you’re talking about. It’s already happened...” He looked from Max to the girls, and back to Max again. “Right?”
No response from Max.
With a loud thud, Jim’s head hit the top of his desk.
Ouch!
