Encouragement

The scene is a hospital room, Homer is sitting on the table when he gets the news. The fish he just ate was posionous, and he receives the news he has 24 hours to live. So he makes a list of things to do for the final day, most of them are simple things like spending time with family, some are funny like telling off the boss, and then his time comes or so we thought. The scene turns to the next day where Homer is still alive, he claims he is going to live life to the fullest. Later he is watching bowling and eating pork rinds.
What would you do if you found out you had 24 hours to live? They asked this question on Dateline to a variety of people, most said spend time with family, some said they would pray, one girl said she would eat as much as she could. Would you change your life? Would there be one relationship that was broken you would try to fix? Would you appreciate what you have more? Ask anyone that has gone through heart attacks, strokes, cancer, and see what their perspective of life is. The reason I say this is life is a gift, a gift that should be embraced and appreciated. This is the perspective God wants us to have on life.
Throughout the gospel the writers make note that Jesus took time away from His ministry to pray alone. In fact He did it pretty often. Jesus knew He needed time to Himself and He knew this time was important. So if the Son of God took time for Himself, I think it is safe to say we should take time for ourselves. Part of why we don't appreciate life is we don't take the time to live it. We get so wrapped up in what we do, we don't take time to do the things we enjoy doing. Ask any stay at home mom or dad if they would like just one day to unwind, it would be like telling them they won the lottery. Our culture has us on this carousel, and it's like we can never get off. There's this to do, that to do, we got to go here. No wonder people are so tired.
One fact I want you to get is that Jesus knows how important it is to have quiet time to yourself, if it wasn't important then why did He do it so much? Life is precious, it's a gift intended to be used to honor God and bring glory to Him. When we stay on this carousel that our culture throws us on, we miss opportunities to serve God. Think of some of your favorite activities, like mine are photography and writing. When I get the time to do them, I feel more at peace and I feel like I have accomplished something. It makes all the other tasks I do even more meaningful because I got to do what I love doing. If you don't get to do what you love doing, you hate everything you are doing. Because you view your activities as a waste of time. God gaves us dreams and passions not so we can think about them but so we can act on them. So if we don't take the time to act on them are we really living?
Like Homer, make a list of things that you want to do and do them. If there is a relationship that needs repaired fix it, if there is a behavior that you are doing that is wrong seek help, and if you have no time to do something you love make time for it. I know it is not easy and may not seem realistic, but Jesus took the time and look what He accomplished. Imagine how you can live your life if you just take the time to do what you love to do. God created you with that passion for a reason. It is up to us to answer that call.
