Student body right!!
During my junior and senior years in high school I played football. Well, let me clarify this statement here-I put on a uniform, I made all practices and sat on the sideline during the football games. I did get a front row seat to watch the game and a close look at the Cheerleaders.
I was part of the team called the "scrubs". A scrub is a football player that acts as the "dummy" for the other players to run over. I had the desire to play football but not the talent. I think the coach figured this out on the first day of practice. In other words, I was the dummy!
I got to the point in my short career as a football player that during practice I hated to hear the coach shout "student body right". Our team played what is called the "single wing" formation. This meant one side of the offensive line would pull back and go charging around the other side in front of the fullback, thus clearing the field for him to make a touchdown and become a hero with the cheerleaders. I was the "dummy" on the left side of the scrubs. When the coach would call out "student body right" I would get run over by all eleven of the offensive players, cleats and all. They seemed to enjoy this and I am glad I could make their day, as the old saying goes. Occasionally they would go into a huddle and I could hear them snickering as they sheepishly looked in my direction. Occasionally the coach would shout out "student body left" which indicated that the end on the other side of the scrub team would get run over by all the offensive players. When the coach would do that the quarterback would usually change the play before the ball was snapped and they would come run over me.
I remember well the first touchdown our team ever made. I was sitting on the sideline as usual keeping quiet, hoping that the coach didn't have a lapse in memory and actually send me into the football game. Coaches in general are known for playing pranks on their players, especially when they have a four-year loosing streak. I didn't want to get run over by eleven strangers although they would have probably enjoyed it. By some miracle our team had gotten down to the other teams 10-yard line. Our quarterback took the ball on snap and the "student body" roared around the other teams left end. Upon being hit by the other teams tackles, guards, and backfield our quarterback fumbled the ball. I witnessed another miracle that night as the ball bounced into the hands of Nub Lee who was in the clear, all the defensive players on top of our quarterback. Nub raced into the end zone making the first touchdown ever at our school and thus became a hero to all the cheerleaders. Nub wore the distinction of making the first touchdown at Carriere High School for the rest of the school year. I on the other hand was glad that this was our last game. I could then get on with more important things such as hunting and fishing with my good friend Tater Bug.
