Imagine your life without trust.
How could you ride a bus unless you trust the driver to take you where you'll go? Would you work for a boss if you don't have confidence in him to pay your salary? Will you do business with somebody you don't believe in? Or, if you are a housewife, would you feel at peace while your husband is away without faith in him?
Trust is needed in every aspect of life. You cannot disentangle yourself from it. Without trust, there are grave consequences. Marriages, friendships, business partnerships, and governments crumble because of lack of trust. Trust is the glue that holds things together.
Yet many adults find it difficult to be fully trusting of others. Why? Usually, it happens after experiencing the pain of prejudice, fear, or betrayal. Because of these, they have to make an effort to be more trusting. Otherwise, such as in a child, the trust comes naturally.
According to Golda Meir, the first person to learn to trust is YOU. She writes, "Trust yourself. Create the kind of self that you will be happy to live with all your life. Make the most of yourself by fanning the tiny, inner sparks of possibility into flames of achievement." Get to trust and value who you are. It is only after doing so that you will be more prepared to trust and value others.
Trust cannot happen without truth. So, to build trust, don't lie. If you lie, you not only lose the trust of others. You also lose trust of yourself. Thus, if you tell your friend that you'll do something for him and then disappear, that's lying. Or, if you tell your husband that you'll be in this place but you're in another place, you betray him. You destroy trust by lies.
Choose to trust. Of course, you cannot read hearts. It is true that not everyone is worthy of trust. Especially when your trust is violated, it can be so difficult to let go of suspicions, fears, and doubts about the other person.
But let go, you must. It is still best to treat everyone as trustworthy, until they prove to be otherwise. Not to do so will keep you away from the blessings that others might want to share with you. As 6th century philosopher Lao-Tzu put it, "Who does not trust enough will not be trusted."
So, trust is also a beautiful decision. It allows you to live life better.
