Trisha’s treasure
The sky was grey and heavy from the rain that was about to pour down. “Just my luck!” said Gabriel as he threw down the rag he was using to shine his brand new sports car. He picked up the cleaning tools and went inside the house. “What’s wrong son?” asked his mother as she felt the front door slam. “Oh nothing, it’s just that when ever I want to clean my car it surprisingly coincides with the most beautiful day of the year!” Gabriel responded and left to his room with out even looking at his mother. He went to his room and threw the door shut.
When the rain stopped it was night and Gabriel was all dressed up and ready to go out. He had a date with a girl named Trisha. He’d met her on his accounting class at college. Gabriel thought it was a date, but she really only agreed to go to his house to study for a test they had the following week.
As he pulled up to the address he had been given he thought to himself, “I must have the wrong address. Trisha didn’t look poor. Oh well, maybe it’s a friends house.” Just as he was thinking this Trisha knocked on his window and made him jump awkwardly from the startle. “You ok?” asked Trisha with a smile from being amused by his reaction. “I’m fine” responded Gabriel with slight embarrassment. “I told you it was the third house on the left not the right silly.” Gabriel turned around and was even more disappointed as he looked at the house made out of wood. It’s bad enough this is a bad neighborhood but she’s got the crummiest house of all! Gabriel thought to himself as he hypocritically forced a smile and said, “You’re looking nice tonight.” Trisha smiled back.
The rain started again as they were pulling up to Gabriel’s house. “Wow this is a big house” said Trisha as she laid eyes on the mansion they were going in. “this is almost as big as my whole neighborhood!” Once they were inside Gabriel gave Trisha a tour of the mansion. When he was done showing the house and trying to impress Trisha he went to the mini bar and poured himself a glass of whiskey.
“So what happened to the rest of the study group?” Trisha asked to make conversation. “Well, Kris is sick and Helen and Becky had something I don’t remember.” He was lying and she could tell, but why? “Would you like something to drink Trish? I used to be a bar tender.” “Some water would be fine” she said firmly. “Water?! Where’s the fun in that?” “Where’s the fun in getting drunk? Anyways I thought we were here to study not drink.” Gabriel put the drink down went to Trisha and tried to kiss her. She immediately pushed him away.
“So this is what your true intentions are. Well I’m sorry but I only see you as a friend.” She said as she felt an uncomfortable heaviness in the room. Gabriel sat down and with a mix of deception, disbelief and anger said, “Well, so much for ghetto girls are easy.”
The words pierced through Trisha causing an eruption of emotions going all through her body but she managed to control herself and instead of snapping at him she calmly gathered her books and said, “I shouldn’t even bother to respond to that comment but I will for your sake not mine. I do live in a small house made out of wood, but that’s not where I’m from. Where I’m from you couldn’t even imagine, because it’s much bigger and prettier than this mansion, it’s a place God has built for me and my family when we leave this world. You think I’m poor because of what you’ve seen of me. But I’m way richer than you are right now because I have Jesus.”
As she said this she opened pulled out a Bible from her bag. “This is for you; it’s worth more than all the gold in the world. Read it with an open heart… Jesus loves you no matter what Gabriel. Here take it, I will pray for you.”
Gabriel stood there in disbelief and looking puzzled at the Bible he had in his hand. He slowly turned around and walked away.
Gabriel was very touched by Trisha’s words but was too embarrassed to talk to her and apologize for his behavior that night. In class he would avoid her and if she was coming in his direction he would turn around. After the course was over Gabriel didn’t see Trisha around the campus anymore and always wondered what became of her.
One day some ten years later while having lunch with a business associate Gabriel sees Trisha at the table across him. She had just finished eating, was paying the bill and getting ready to leave. The sky was grey and the first drops of rain were starting to touch the ground. Trisha stood outside with an umbrella as if waiting to be picked up.
“So what’s your secret Gabriel? What should we invest in?” Gabriel turned to him as if being interrupted. His friend noticed the woman Gabriel was looking at. “Should we go ask her? I don’t know if she knows about investing but she’s a looker!” said the associate as he laughed.
“You know Bill, that woman over there taught me a great lesson a long time ago when I was young and poor. She happens to be one of the wealthiest persons I know. So I’m going to go over and say hi. We’ll do this some other time. In the meantime if you want to know where my real wealth is, here’s where you should start looking.” Having said this Gabriel put a Bible in front of Bill and walked away, stepping out into the rain and meeting Trisha on the side walk. But this time he didn’t want to harass a girl he thought was inferior to him, this time he wanted to get to know a sister in Christ he hadn’t seen in a very long time.
“Am I a little late for an apology?” Gabriel asked as he tapped Trisha gently on the shoulder. Trisha turned around a little bewildered and took two seconds staring at Gabriel before she recognized him. “I just wanted to tell you that I’m sorry for the way I treated you that night at my parent’s house, but in part I’m glad because God used you as an instrument in my search for Him. Thank you for that.” As he finished speaking a family van pulled up to the sidewalk and honked at Trisha. Gabriel looked and saw a man driving with two little children in the back.
“There’s no need for an apology… I knew you looked familiar; I just couldn’t make out the face. Well, I’m glad you’re doing so good Gabriel, thank God. I’m so happy my prayer was answered. But what’s wrong with your friend over there in the restaurant he looks puzzled.” Gabriel looked at her with a smile and said, “Oh nothing he’s just an associate of mine in a state very similar to the one I was when we met. His name is Bill. Would you mind praying for him?” Trisha returned the smile, “I sure will.”
The car honked again and this time Trisha reacted, “that’s my ride, I have to go, it was nice to see you again. Here’s my card in case you need anything. Bye, God bless!”
Gabriel put the card in his pocket and went back inside where Bill was. “Is this some type of joke Gabriel?” Bill asked trying to make sense of the situation. “No it’s not. It’s very serious Bill.” Gabriel responded looking at him straight in the eyes. “How is the Bible going to help my career!?” Bill asked with some frustration.
Gabriel grabbed him gently by the shoulder before he turned around and left. “Read it with an open heart…Jesus loves you no matter what Bill.” As he let him go Bill walked away and Gabriel saw a reflection of the past but with a different view because this time it was he who threw the seed. The seed that was to be watered every day with bent knees and raised hands.
A seed that in time was to grow and spread and bear fruit. Fruit that will pop open and spill more seeds, planting a beautiful treasure that His sheep will enjoy for eternity
