TGIF

My captain approached behind me. His hard deliberate steps echoed like thunder. He was a mean man and I embraced for his wrath.
"Soldier, is there a problem?" You were given an order!"
I clicked my heels and stiffened to attention.
"Yes,Sir. No,Sir. The man is almost gone. I was just letting nature..."
His hot foul breath was in my face.It nearly made me sick.
"Finish the job, Private."
My mind raced. I did not want to do this horrible thing but I must follow orders. I am a soldier and it is an order. My heart ached. I always believed this one was not guilty. Unlike like the other two. They had bragged on their unlawful deeds. I will do my job. I could hear death in each shallow breath.
I looked up and our eyes met. I was frozen. It seemed as if he was looking deep into my very soul. Then...so slightly...he smiled and seemingly nodded. I pushed the spear upward. Hard. It pierced his heart and his blood covered me. At least it hid my tears from the other soldiers.
"Let's go." shouted the captain. "Their families or enemies can have them now. No matter to me! Private, you go get that Jew blood washed off before it gets into your soul!" He laughed.
I went down to the river. I had several small wounds from an earlier battle. I dipped into the cool water several times thinking about the man on the cross. As I began to dry off I realized my wounds had been healed and were gone. I cried.
"God, forgive me!" I closed my eyes only to see His face, His eyes, and His smile. I had been forgiven of all sins. I knelt to pray and I thanked God for his blessing. When I finished I picked up a stick and there on the bank wrote TGIF.
Thank God I'm Forgiven.
