Scripture Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:1-9
It was in 1939 when Dorothy first closed her eyes on the silver screen and whispered those five unforgettable words, “There’s no place like home…” Being a simple young girl swept away into the strange and overwhelming world of Oz, Dorothy wanted no other place to be, but to be back in Kansas, her one true home. And despite all the magic and glitz of Oz, none of that ever stopped her from losing focus on that—on the one place where she knew she belonged.
As believers in Christ, we sometimes find ourselves lost in the glitz and the “flying monkeys” of this world, sometimes even to the point where we begin to treat this world as our only home, when in fact it’s only a temporary one.
In 2 Corinthians 5:1, the Apostle Paul makes it clear that not only is our home on earth a temporary one, but it’s one that’s nothing like our one true eternal home in heaven. Even Jesus, Himself, makes it very clear that what lies ahead of us, as believers, infinitely outweighs any luxury that our earthly home could afford, when He says, “In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.” (John 14:2)
Sometimes, when we wander long enough in this world, it becomes too easy to start focusing more on the yellow-bricks of the road, rather than where the road actually leads. And when we begin to lose sight of the beauty of our destination, it becomes so easy to get distracted, getting more caught up on eating wild mushrooms and playing with mud-pies rather than on serving the Lord and delighting in Him. Just imagine our disappointment if we finally come face to face with God, only to find that most of our lives were spent on mushrooms and dirt, rather than on pleasing Him and earning heavenly treasures far greater than anything on earth!
As Christians, we must remember that we are all visitors on this earth and that our real eternal home lies with God in heaven. Though the spell and despair of this earth can be overwhelming at times, we, just like Dorothy, must never lose focus on where we truly belong—that one place beyond any rainbow in the world.
Bottom Line: There’s no place like home in no place but heaven.
