Nub
Most of the young boys living at Caesar, MS during my early years were known by a nickname. In fact, I don't remember the given names of most of them. There was Tater Bug Ladner, my best friend who assisted me in most of my devilment, as Mama used to say. I'm not sure how Tater got his nickname but I do remember the older folks saying, "that yungun ain't no bigger than a Tater Bug". I guess that is how he got stuck with that nickname. Then there was Skunk Lee, my cousin, who is the character in a future story. Goggle Eye Pearson got his nickname because the glasses he wore made his eyes look a lot bigger than they were.
Nub Lee was another cousin of mine, about the second or third I think. Nub had the distinct honor of having a missing right big toe. Nub had the good fortune, as the rest of us kids use to say, of getting his right big toe caught between the chain and the sprocket of his bicycle while racing down Shug Branch hill. I don't remember if the toe was severed at that time, whether it just rotted off, or whether it had to be amputated. I prefer to think that Dr. Goss, the local doctor, amputated it.
Nub rode that horse, as the saying goes, of having his foot in bandages for a long time. That meant he didn't have to get out in the fields like the rest of us to hoe corn, pick okra, or anything else that hinted of work. After the bandage was removed Nub had to go bare foot like we did for the rest of the summer. And therein lay the problem.
Many of the farmers of the area planted watermelons to sell at the Farmers Market at Bay St. Louis or to truckers who would haul them off to far away places such as Oma or Hot Coffee, Mississippi. Most of the Farmers didn't mind us boys "borrowing" a watermelon or two, the borrowing usually taking place after Church on Sunday evening when we had some free time. On the other hand, some of the farmers delighted in tracking down the culprits and bringing them to justice with their parents.
It had been raining "cats and dogs" as the old saying goes. Our usual MO was to meet at downtown Caesar, MS (Grandpa Bob's General Mercantile store) and start discussing what we were going to do for the rest of the day. This particular day there were several of us at the store-Tater, Goggle Eye, Nub, and myself. It seemed like a good day to raid a watermelon patch.
Monday morning bright and early there was a knock on our door. "Mr. Fred, your boy has been in my watermelon patch".
"How do you know it was him"?
"Nub told me. He said it was Goggle Eye, Tater, himself, and your boy".
"How did you know Nub was involved and how do you know he is telling the truth"?
"They were all barefooted and Nub squealed on the rest of them".
"I'll take care of it", my dad said. And he did!!!
