The Shadow of His Wings

Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast. Psalm 57:1

My granddaughter, Alyssa, was nearly three years old when she spent a few hours with me. We went to town to do a little shopping. As we walked from the store back to the van, Alyssa beside me watching her little pony tails flopping in the black form on the ground. I watched her quietly as she'd slow her pace, and then speed it up as if determined to get away from her agitating follower. All the while, intently with burdened expression, she watched her unwanted friend.

Gently, I said to Alyssa, "Can't you get away from your shadow?" She smiled nervously up at me. I explained to her about shadows. We looked at Grandma's shadow, and the grocery cart's shadow. By now we were nearly to the van. Alyssa was still looking here and there and in many directions, trying to find a way to move herself from the shadow. At last I suggested to Alyssa, "Jump into the van and your shadow will leave you." With great relief she crawled in the van, freed of her burden.

Later that night I was facing a tremendous struggle in my spirit. Because of a situation that had happened a few hours prior, I felt hurt, rejected and unwisely attacked. Sleep eluded me as I wrestled with the Father for quietness in my spirit. Suddenly I remembered Alyssa and her shadow. Just as quickly as the thought came to me, I sensed the Father's voice. Ever so gently He said, "Donna, you can not get away from My shadow. I am covering you. No matter how hard you struggle and ache in your pain, my shadow is completely over you."

I reflected on Alyssa's intense effort to flee from her shadow. No matter what she did, the shadow remained. I nestled down under my Heavenly Father's comforting shadow and marveled at His love. Even as spiteful and angry as I felt, the Father saw me through His blood and hovered over me, around me, beside me. He engulfed me in the very presence of His shadow.

Prayer: Father God, I bless You that even in my times of wretchedness, You see me through Your blood and continue to hover over me with Your shadow. Amen.
