I have a friendship of 50 years now, which is odd, since I'm only 39. We met in 3rd grade, so we know all the really important things there are to know about each other, meaning we can blackmail each other for the rest of our lives. We have our common memories of childhood adventures -- that of walking to the shopping mall and buying bags of goldfish that have expired by the time we got home. Or having slumber parties where certain clothing items were frozen while the victims sleep. Or taking modeling classes together and learning to walk in a gimp-legged fashion with our noses in the air, thinking that "snooty" is the way to be. Or picking up meadowlark eggs on the walk home from school, and trying to hatch them in the oven. Which, by the way, never works; don't try this at home.
In other ways, as adults, we're oh so different. Meaning that she's very highly educated, and I barely made it through high school. She is a perfectionist, and I am so not. This is almost an "Oscar and Felix" situation, but since we don't live together, that means our husbands have to put up with us. Anyway, she and her husband recently built their dream house. And I DO mean dream -- it is utterly magnificent, to the point that I have to ask God's forgiveness for indulging in the sin of extreme envy. Brand-new houses mean brand-new appliances, solid new decks, shiny hardwood floors, crack-free walls, bathrooms with no clogs ... things I can only begin to imagine in my own elderly house.
And they have two large dogs that they absolutely adore. The dogs get to run in the nearby fields and woods during the days. And since dogs are prone to rolling in highly unspeakable things, my friend has the ultimate solution. In their garage, they've installed a shower for the express purpose of hosing off the worldly grime from their beloved pets before they're allowed to come into the sparkling new home.
She doesn't realize it yet, but her house-and-shower combo is also a wonderful example of God's master plan surrounding her. As much as she loves those dogs, the rule is, no shower, no home comfort. Just as that shower is the only way into her home, so God will not allow anyone in His beloved creation to come into His Perfect Kingdom without going through the "shower" that is Christ. And this thought is what keeps me from focusing on my dilapidated earthly home, and instead being eternally grateful to Him for the promise of providing me with His Perfect Home.
