Isaiah 42:6 “I, the Lord, officially commission you;13
I take hold of your hand.
I protect you14 and make you a covenant mediator for people,15
and a light16 to the nations,17
42:7 to open blind eyes,18
to release prisoners19 from dungeons,
those who live in darkness from prisons. (NET Bible)
If you are like me, you occasionally wonder just what the point of being a Christian really is. The world doesn't seem to be getting better. Life isn't any easier for Christians. In fact, in many ways it's actually more difficult to go through life as a believer. So, really... What's the point?Today's passage speaks directly to that quandry. God has called us to be mediators, lights, healers and rescuers.
In other words, our lives are no longer about ourselves. God has "commissioned" us. Like officers in the military, God has taken us aside and given us authority and the responsibility to perform certain tasks for people in His kingdom. We can be mediators by praying for others. We can be lights by living up to the standards of our churches. We can open the eyes of the spiirtually blind by our testimonies and by relaying the Good News to them. Likewise we may release people from their spiritual prisons and dungeons by teaching them the message of salvation and leading them to christ Jesus.
It seems like an awesome and even daunting set of tasks, doesn't it? But remember God's promise at the beginning of today's passage, "I take hold of your hand. I protect you..." This is all God's doing and it is really up to Him to perform these tasks through us. Our job is to remain faithful to God and to be open to His will in all areas of our lives. Then it is Christ in us and Christ through us who will perform the miracles and bring people to Himself.
God, commission us into your Kingdom today. Work through us for the sake of those in our lives who really need You. Open their eyes and free their souls and spirits so that they may see you and come to You and be free in You. In Jesus' Name we pray. AMEN.
Our challenge today is to accept the responsibilty that God has handed each of us as believers to act on His behalf for the lives of those around us. This is made easier with the knowledge that Christ is with us and even holding our hands as we go.
Be blessed and a blessing,
Christopher
